Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror, or cheval glass, is a dual-height freestanding mirror mounted on a frame that allows it to tilt. Popularised in the 19th century, these mirrors were designed for full-length viewing in dressing rooms and bedrooms.

Victorian examples frequently utilise fine hardwoods such as satin birch, mahogany, or walnut, featuring turned columns, brass adjustment knobs, and heavy trestle bases to ensure stability.

Authentic Victorian pieces often feature original hand-blown glass with minor mercurial foxing, hand-carved details or turned supports, and traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints on the frame.

Position the mirror in a dressing area, bedroom, or spacious hallway where its full height can be utilised. The warm tones of satin birch contrast effectively against modern muted paint palettes or minimalist plaster walls.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber. Clean the glass with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with glass cleaner, avoiding direct contact with the wooden frame.
