George III Mahogany Serpentine Toilet Dressing Mirror C.1800

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

An attractive George III mahogany serpentine toilet or dressing mirror, dating from around 1800, with elegant proportions and a particularly pleasing aged mirror plate.

The rectangular adjustable mirror plate is contained within a mahogany frame with gilt slip and supported between tapering uprights surmounted by brass finials. Below is a serpentine-fronted base fitted with three small drawers and raised on shaped bracket feet.

The central drawer retains a lock with working key. A retailer's label for Trollope & Colls Ltd, Belgrave Square, London (c.1920–1930) is attached to the underside, providing an interesting element of its later history.

A charming and useful Georgian dressing mirror, combining elegant serpentine form with a wonderfully atmospheric aged plate.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 64 cm

Width: 43 cm

Depth: 21 cm

CONDITION

The mirror is in good, solid condition with an attractive colour and patina. The drawers run freely, the central lock has a working key, and the side adjustment screws hold the mirror securely in position.

There are light marks, knocks and wear commensurate with age and use, together with some minor historic losses and repairs to the veneer.

The mirror plate has extensive attractive age-related foxing and silvering deterioration, particularly towards the upper and lower areas, as clearly shown in the photographs. This gives the mirror considerable period character, although buyers wishing to use it primarily as a functional dressing mirror should be aware that the ageing affects the reflected image.

Overall, a very decorative Georgian mirror with an appealing serpentine base, good colour and plenty of period character.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. The photographs form an important part of the description and should be viewed alongside the written condition report. If you would like further information or additional photographs, we are always happy to help before purchase. If there are any critical dimensions then please check these with us before purchase.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III toilet mirror, also known as a dressing mirror, is an 18th or early 19th-century tabletop mirror designed to sit atop a chest of drawers or dressing table, often incorporating small drawers within its base.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, brass hardware handles, and silvered glass.

Authentic Georgian examples display hand-sawn timber marks, original silvered glass oxidisation or foxing, hand-carved joinery details, and period-correct brass finials and drop handles.

A Georgian toilet mirror can be styled atop a contemporary sideboard, a hall console, or a bedroom chest of drawers to add warm wood tones and architectural contrast.

Dust the mahogany frame regularly with a soft cotton cloth and apply beeswax sparingly, taking care to avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners on original silvered mirror plates.
