A tea caddy is a lockable container designed to store loose tea leaves, originating in the 17th century when tea was an expensive luxury commodity requiring secure containment.

19th-century tea caddies were constructed from fine timbers such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut, frequently featuring mother-of-pearl or bone escutcheons and interior foil linings.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural grain variations, hand-cut dovetail jointing, natural timber patination, historical keyhole escutcheons, and signs of hand-finished construction.

An antique tea caddy functions as a decorative accent on a sideboard, mantlepiece, or desk, providing discrete storage for small everyday items while adding historical character.

Position timber boxes away from direct heat sources and sunlight to avoid warping, clean regularly with a dry cloth, and apply natural beeswax polish periodically to protect the finish.
