Set of 10 (8+2) Mahogany Hepplewhite Style Dining Chairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A fine set of ten Hepplewhite style mahogany dining chairs, comprising eight side chairs and two carver chairs, crafted in the elegant neoclassical taste.

Each chair is raised upon finely tapered and fluted front legs, terminating in traditional spade feet, with elegantly swept rear legs providing excellent balance and proportion. The chairs feature bow-fronted lift-out seats, which have been recently re-upholstered in quality fabric, ensuring they are ready for immediate use.

The beautifully shaped backs are fitted with fluted uprights, enriched with finely carved decorative detailing, and surmounted by an elegant shaped cresting rail, reflecting the timeless refinement of the Hepplewhite design. The pair of carver chairs are further enhanced with gracefully shaped arms and matching shaped arm supports, providing both comfort and visual appeal.

Presented in good condition, this handsome set of ten dining chairs offers an ideal combination of classic English craftsmanship, elegant design, and everyday practicality. Perfect for both period and contemporary interiors, they would make a distinguished addition to any dining room.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hepplewhite style furniture, originating in late eighteenth-century England, is known for its graceful curves, restrained ornamentation, and refined neoclassical proportions. Key characteristics include shield or square backs, delicate carvings, and slender tapered legs ending in spade feet.

Dense timber such as mahogany was favoured for its rich colour and ability to hold fine carving details. Joinery typically utilised traditional mortise and tenon construction alongside drop-in or fixed webbed upholstered seating.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery, corner blocks beneath the seat frames, and evidence of hand-planed timber on internal rails. The patination of mahogany and subtle construction marks on unfinished undersides also indicate age and traditional craft.

Pairing a mahogany dining set with a clean-lined contemporary dining table creates an engaging visual contrast between classic and modern design elements. Neutral upholstery fabrics help soften the dark timber tones, allowing the chairs to suit transitional decor schemes.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the finish. Keep chairs away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, joint loosening, or fabric fading.
