Antique French 19th Century Ormolu Wall Mirror with Six Branch Candelabra, Circa 1860

19th century
Description

An exceptional and highly decorative 19th-century French ormolu wall mirror, dating to circa 1860, beautifully crafted in richly gilded bronze and complete with its original six-branch candelabra.

This impressive mirror features a pair of removable candelabra arms, expertly secured with high quality dovetailed fittings, demonstrating the outstanding level of French craftsmanship. When fitted, the elegant side arms create a striking six light display, making this an eye catching statement piece for both period and contemporary interiors.

The substantial cast ormolu frame is finely chased with an intricate lattice pattern interwoven with scrolling foliage and floral decoration. Crowning the mirror is a beautifully modelled pediment depicting a rural bagpipe player, cast in solid bronze and adding a charming pastoral touch.

Retaining its original circular mirror plate, the glass displays an attractive light patina consistent with age while remaining in good condition. The mirror is traditionally housed from the reverse within its original pine backboard, secured by brass retaining clips, and fitted with a substantial hanging ring for secure wall mounting.

The ormolu retains its bright original finish, and the piece is presented in excellent condition with no damage or repairs. Combining sculptural beauty with practical function, this remarkable mirror is a superb example of mid 19th century French decorative art and would make an outstanding focal point in any elegant interior.

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A girandole is an ornate wall-mounted lighting fixture incorporating a mirror backplate with attached candle branches, designed to multiply and scatter candlelight across a room. Popularised in 18th and 19th-century France, ormolu versions feature finely chased gilt bronze or brass mounts with decorative motifs such as acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and cresting.

19th-century French girandoles were primarily constructed using cast brass or bronze treated with fire-gilding or electroplating to achieve an ormolu finish. The mirror plate was made from hand-blown or early plate glass, held within elaborate cast metal frameworks featuring integrated candle sconces.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display crisp hand-chased surface details, heavy metal casting, and visible hand-cut threaded screws or assembly marks on the reverse side. Natural signs of age include mild surface patination, subtle oxidisation in cast recesses, and light distressing on the silvering of the original glass mirror plate.

Position the piece as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, entry console table, or dining room sideboard to maximize light reflection. Pairing detailed gilt metalwork against neutral plaster walls or dark moody paint finishes creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Dust gilt metalwork regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth to clean intricate cast details without scratching the finish. Avoid liquid polishes, water, or chemical cleaners, as these strip gilding; glass cleaner should be applied carefully to a cloth rather than sprayed directly to protect adjacent metalwork.
