19th Century Mahogany Adjustable Dressing Table Chair

19th century
Description

A fine 19th century mahogany music chair, now ideally suited for use as a dressing table chair. The shaped back features a decorative carved lyre splat fitted with brass strings, framed by reeded uprights with carved rope-twist detail and a gently curved top rail.

The circular brown leather seat revolves and adjusts in height by means of a substantial threaded wooden mechanism. Raised on four elegant splayed legs united by turned stretchers and a circular central support, the chair has a rich, warm colour and an attractive decorative appearance. Originally designed as a music chair, it would now make a practical and characterful dressing table chair.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The lyre back design is rooted in Neo-Classical and Regency aesthetics, featuring a backrest central splat carved in the shape of a classical lyre instrument, frequently incorporating brass rods to represent strings.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or rosewood, fitted with wooden or iron threaded internal screw mechanisms, brass structural elements, and leather or textile upholstered seats.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut wooden or heavy cast iron threaded screws beneath the seat, smooth hand-carved turning joinery, and evidence of historic age or wear on the internal mechanism.

A lyre back chair works well as a focal accent piece at a contemporary desk, vanity table, or music room, adding historical contrast against clean architectural lines.

Mahogany should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned with natural beeswax, while leather upholstery benefits from occasional gentle cleaning and dedicated leather nourishing cream.
