Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian maritime style captains trunk is made from solid pine with a dark brown painted finish. The rectangular sea chest features a flat top lid with white painted lettering, an iron latch on the front, and iron drop handles on the sides. Visible details include wear consistent with age, authentic surface marks, and dark wooden construction. It measures 31 cm high by 84 cm wide and 55 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this piece works well placed at the foot of the bed or positioned in a gentlemen's library. It provides useful storage while serving as a decorative accent table or blanket box within a living space or bedroom.

FAQs

A captains sea chest is a sturdy wooden trunk designed for maritime travel, historically used by naval officers to store personal possessions, navigational tools, and uniforms.

Maritime trunks were typically constructed from durable woods such as pine, oak, or mahogany, fitted with iron or brass hardware and side drop handles for transport.

Authentic examples often feature original painted lettering, hand-forged iron fittings, dovetail joinery, and wear patterns consistent with shipboard use.

A flat-topped sea chest functions effectively as a low coffee table, accent storage piece at the foot of a bed, or a decorative hallway feature.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid chemical cleaners that might strip historical painted inscriptions or original patinated finishes.
