Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 18th-century Dutch Baroque display cabinet is formed from walnut and glass with brass hardware, presenting a warm brown colour with extensive floral marquetry. The upper section contains two glazed doors beneath a shaped bonnet top finished with a carved shell cresting, while the base has three drawers including a distinctive bombe lower drawer. Details include ornate brass handles on each drawer, curved mouldings, and carved claw and ball feet supporting the structure. It measures 235 cm high, 166 cm wide, and 52 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this large cabinet serves as a prominent focal point for displaying collectables and storing items in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The intricate floral wood inlay covers the visible surfaces, and the glazed upper section allows objects to be viewed on the internal shelves. The lower drawers offer concealed storage, combining traditional craftsmanship with practical utility for household use.

FAQs

An 18th-century Dutch marquetry vitrine is a glazed display cabinet crafted in the Netherlands, characterised by intricate wood inlays depicting floral motifs, foliage, and urns. These cabinets typically feature an arched or shaped cornice, glass doors on the upper section, and a bombe-form chest of drawers forming the lower base.

Cabinetmakers utilised native and imported woods including walnut, fruitwood, sycamore, and kingwood laid over an oak substrate. The detailed floral patterns were cut and fitted using manual veneering techniques, with cast brass hardware added for drawer handles and key escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-sawn veneers that are thicker than modern machine-cut veneers, uneven timber shrinkage, hand-dovetailed drawer joints, and natural age-related oxidisation on unpainted surfaces. Original glass panels may display subtle distortion, air bubbles, or variations in thickness.

A marquetry vitrine functions as a central feature when placed against a plain backdrop in a dining space, living room, or reception area. It provides structured storage for ceramics, glassware, or books while adding historical contrast to minimalist or classic interior schemes.

Maintain a stable indoor climate away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme humidity changes to prevent veneer lifting or timber warping. Clean surfaces gently with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish sparingly along the grain once or twice a year.
