This 18th century Dutch Baroque cabinet on chest originates from around 1750 and is constructed from walnut, fruitwood, brass, and glass. The piece exhibits warm brown tones with detailed floral marquetry inlay depicting trailing flowers and leaves, highlighted by ivory elements on the chest top. The upper section comprises a shaped pediment top with a central finial, a pair of glazed arched doors outlined in gilt metal, and two small drawers fitted with original gilt metal handles. The interior contains a single shelf lined in red fabric. The lower section takes the form of a bombe chest with two large drawers featuring ornate gilt metal handles and escutcheons, edged with a gilt metal trim. The structure stands on shaped cabriole legs finished with decorative gilt metal mounts. Measuring 155 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 50 cm deep, this display cabinet suits placement in a gentleman's library, study, or living space to store and display collectibles, books, or tableware. The rich marquetry and decorative hardware create a striking focal point while offering practical drawer and shelving storage for everyday home organization.

Dutch floral marquetry emerged in the late 17th century and peaked during the 18th century, influenced by the Dutch Golden Age fascination with botany and tulips. Craftsmen used contrasting wood veneers to create highly detailed pictorial designs of flowers, urns, and birds on large case furniture like cabinets and chests.

These cabinets were predominantly built with a solid oak carcass overlaid with rich walnut veneers. The decorative marquetry incorporated various fruitwoods, holly, boxwood, and sycamore, occasionally accented with mother-of-pearl, bone, or ivory inlays alongside cast brass hardware.

Authentic period pieces display thick, hand-sawn veneers rather than thin modern machine cuts, along with hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction. Inspecting the interior reveal hand-planed timber, irregular brass casting, and natural shrinkage cracks or wood movement consistent with age.

Place the piece as a singular focal point against a neutral or dark backdrop in a hallway, dining room, or drawing room. Balancing its ornate marquetry with modern art or clean-lined minimalist ceramics creates a sophisticated contrast between contemporary and classical styles.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled room away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain and dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth.
