Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian overmantle mirror is a large wall-mounted or mantel-resting mirror designed specifically to sit above a fireplace. Produced during the 19th century, these mirrors typically feature arched upper frames, gilded surfaces, and ornate crestings intended to reflect light and expand the visual space of a reception room.

Victorian gilt mirrors were constructed using wooden frames, often pine or lime, layered with composition mouldings made from chalk, resin, and linseed oil. The frame was coated in bole clay and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf, framing a silvered or mercury-backed glass plate.

Authentic Victorian examples display evidence of hand-applied leafing, often showing red or yellow bole clay through worn gilded areas. Additional identifiers include original wooden backboards fastened with iron nails and age-related oxidation or foxing on the glass plate.

Place the mirror directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or atop a modern console table to serve as a central focal point. The metallic finish and historical form contrast effectively against contemporary paint palettes and modern minimalist furnishings.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre duster. Avoid applying water, commercial cleaning chemicals, or damp cloths to the frame, as liquid can dissolve the traditional water-gilding adhesive and degrade the composition ornament.
