This nineteenth-century folk art table snuff box is manufactured from birch wood and papier-mâché in a warm brown colour. The circular lid displays a carved relief illustration depicting a figure taking snuff, accompanied by a maker stamp reading C. W CAMLSON STOCKHOLM. The deep vessel incorporates impressed decorations around the edges and shows visible wear to the finish. Measuring 12 cm wide by 7 cm high, the box accommodates a generous quantity of tobacco. In a contemporary interior, the piece sits upon an office desk or library table to store small items. The dark wood grain, textured relief carving, and stamped maker's mark offer tactile visual interest within a gentleman's library setting. The compact lidded vessel brings historical character to a workspace surface while maintaining practical utility.

FAQs

A table snuff box is a communal container designed to sit on a tabletop for guests to share powdered tobacco, widespread throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These boxes were traditionally crafted from carved timber, pressed wood, papier-mache, horn, pewter, or silver, often featuring relief carvings or engraved detail on the lid.

Authentic pieces feature natural surface wear, historic patination in crevices, clear relief detail, and occasionally maker stamps or inscriptions near the rim or base.

Place the box on an office desk, coffee table, or library shelf alongside books and art objects to add historical texture to the decor.

Dust the surface lightly with a dry, soft brush or cloth, keep the item away from direct heat or humidity, and apply microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the timber.
