Antique Stained Pine Collectors Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A good quality tabletop collectors cabinet dating from the early 20th Century. It is a good quality piece made from stained pine and it has four drawers, each with their original turned knobs and dovetail joints.

Chests such as this were used for storing a variety of things - rocks, butterflies, eggs or coins etc. Nowadays they make excellent collectors cabinets for all sorts of things or even jewellery.

Overall it is in good original condition and has developed a lovely aged patina. There are signs of age and use and the cabinet has picked up some knocks and scuffs and sign of wear over the years but nothing detrimental and it displays well. The drawers are generally clean and tidy and they open smoothly. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it is certainly a usable piece.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, collectors cabinets were designed to store micro-collections such as geological specimens, coins, shells, or dried botanical items. These miniature drawer units were positioned on desktops or library tables to allow easy access and classification of items.

Victorian cabinet makers frequently used native softwoods like pine for utility pieces, often finished with a dark stain to imitate costlier hardwoods. Drawer handles were commonly hand-turned from matching wood, and construction relied on dovetail joints and solid plinth bases.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joinery, uneven wood shrinkage lines, and hand-turned wooden knobs secured from behind. Look for surface wear consistent with age around drawer pulls and top surfaces rather than artificially applied distress marks.

Modern interior schemes use tabletop cabinets as functional storage on office desks, sideboards, or console tables. They serve as organizational storage for stationery, jewellery, or modern accessories while introducing texture and historical interest into contemporary rooms.

Maintain stained pine by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually along the natural grain. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent wood shrinkage, cracking, and uneven colour fading.
