Antique Stained Pine Specimen Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A lovely tabletop collectors cabinet dating from the late 19th / early 20th Century. It is a good quality piece made from stained pine and it has four drawers, each with a removable glass cover and dovetail joints.

Chests such as this were used for storing a variety of things - rocks, butterflies, eggs or coins etc. The top drawer has remains of pencil labels for butterflies. Nowadays they make excellent collectors cabinets for all sorts of items or even jewellery.

Overall it is in good original condition and has developed a lovely aged patina. There are signs of age and use and the cabinet has picked up some knocks and scuffs and sign of wear over the years but nothing detrimental and it displays well. There are some minor old marks and stains in the drawer linings but overall they're clean and tidy and they open smoothly. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it is certainly a usable piece.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Specimen cabinets were popularized during the nineteenth century by naturalists and collectors to organise, store, and display physical collections such as insects, geological samples, botanical specimens, and coins.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timbers such as pine, mahogany, or oak, featuring shallow hand-dovetailed drawers, solid backboards, and hand-turned wooden knobs.

Authentic period examples display signs of age such as natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut joinery on drawer linings, wear along the drawer runners, and original turned wooden handles with aged surface patina.

A desktop specimen cabinet can be placed on an office desk, sideboard top, or deep window sill to store small modern essentials, stationery, or jewellery while adding warm wood texture to the room.

Dust the cabinet regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year to nourish the pine timber and protect the original finish.
