Large 19th Century Italian Ebonised and Faux Tortoiseshell Mirror - No2

19th century
Description

We have been fortunate to get hold of some truly stunning 19th century Italian frames that we have added high quality 6mm mirror plate too.

These mirrors make incredible features on any wall in a great number of interiors. The design is arguably quite contemporary which is why I love this particular style of frame.

The moulding is incredibly fine and when I spoke to my restorer about these he informed me just how hard it is to make this moulding so it really is a testament to the crafts people of the time that created these.

This example is one of our nicest we have had with the faux tortoiseshell details. Rich colour and the perfect contrast to the ebonised frame. The mirror also retains in original gilt slip and brass name plate for whatever was in the frame before.

112cm by 91cm

Can be hung either portrait or landscape.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century Italian mirrors often feature ebonised wood finishes inspired by earlier 17th-century Baroque designs, incorporating contrasting inlay panels such as faux tortoiseshell or bone to create depth and architectural structure.

Craftsmen typically applied painted horn, stained wood veneers, or early celluloid over foil backings to simulate the natural mottling and translucency of tortoiseshell within decorative frames.

Authentic 19th-century frames feature natural wear on high points showing underlying timber, period joinery on the reverse, and precise ripple or wave mouldings created with traditional hand planes.

Position the mirror above a sideboard or mantelpiece as a focal point, where the dark ebonised tones contrast against neutral walls and complement contemporary or classic furnishings.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical solvents or water, and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the ebonised finish and inlay panels.
