Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian fret mirror is a style of wall mirror originating in 18th-century Britain, characterised by a mahogany frame with flat, scroll-cut decorative edges known as fretwork. These frames frequently draw inspiration from the design pattern books of Thomas Chippendale and often feature gilded interior slips and central carved motifs.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using solid or veneered mahogany cut into flat scrollwork shapes. The inner bezel or slip surrounding the mirror glass was typically carved pine or lime wood coated in oil or water gilding, while the glass plate itself was mercurially silvered.

Authentic period pieces show hand-cut fretwork with slight irregularities, visible saw marks on the unfinished backboards, and natural oxidisation or ghosting on the original mirror glass. Additionally, original gilding on the inner slip often displays age-appropriate wear, bole layer exposure, and dirt accumulation within carved recessed areas.

A Georgian fret mirror can be mounted above a modern console table, sideboard, or fireplace mantle to create a focal point. The dark wood tone and geometric silhouette provide visual structure against contemporary neutral backdrops, painted plaster, or patterned wallcoverings.

Dust the timber frame regularly using a soft, dry lint-free cloth or clean bristle brush, avoiding commercial chemical polishes or water. Clean the mirror glass by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a cloth rather than the mirror itself, ensuring no liquid seeps into the gilded edge or behind the frame.
