Tramp art is an art movement that flourished between the 1870s and 1940s, characterised by hand-carving reclaimed wooden cigar boxes and shipping crates. Artisans used pocketknives to carve geometric notch patterns and layer the strips to create decorative objects.

Artisans constructed tramp art predominantly from softwoods salvaged from cigar boxes, held together with glue or small brass tacks. The construction relies on layering notch-carved wooden strips in diminishing sizes to produce a faceted, three-dimensional structure.
