Cheshire Ladder Back Rush Seated Arm Chair In Painted Ash, Circa 1800
£675 $923 €781
Rare and very original ladder-back armchair, typical of the Lancashire/Cheshire area, entirely made from Ash. Examining the piece, this has obviously been cleft from close to green timber before being turned on a pole lathe. It has plenty of marks around the piece suggesting that it’s manufacturing method, is completely by hand. It has areas on the stretchers where sections of bark have once been and fallen off in use; along with spoke shave marks, so typical of a genuinely old chair, it is simply lovely, with a pleasingly tactile feel to the well-worn arms polished by years of handling.
Typical too, there are many signs of use and wear – the front stretcher; the shape, again typical of the region is beautifully worn; to the point most of the front turned detail has been worn off in use. But, a look at the back of this section and you can see delicate details that once would have adorned the front. This is commensurate with the whole piece, it is simply wonderful, proudly telling it...’s age and history as it should. It’s comfortable too – there’s plenty of width in the seat and it doesn’t pinch like some later chairs do.
The rush seating is in great condition – along with the surface finish of the wood, which shows plenty of signs of it’s original painted finish, which we’ve very carefully preserved, using the minimal of invasive cleaning to keep what’s still there, intact. We have carefully revived the remainder and re-waxed the piece to a lovely warm glow.
It’s a very old chair, so you’d expect to see the odd repair, which it has had to the bottoms of the front feet and a small section at the back of one of the rears. They are old period repairs, which themselves, tell a tale – so they’ve been left in all their imperfect glory that simply blends in. But if you look very hard, they are there!
A lovely comfortable homely piece, you can see yourself sitting in by a roaring fire with a nice glass of ale and a book!
