Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This classical Louis XVI style wall mirror is fashioned from wood and gesso finished in silver leaf, framing a bevelled glass plate. The horizontal rectangular silhouette features a gadrooned moulding around the outer border and a centred crested garland pediment formed by floral swags and a decorative round wreath at the top. The silvered surface exhibits visible tonal variations and subtle antiquing along the frame edges, whilst the reverse retains the original back panels. Practical dimensions of 64 cm high and 122 cm wide make this overmantel mirror suitable for display in a living room, dining room, or hallway, positioned horizontally above a sideboard or mantelpiece to reflect light and enhance interior space.

FAQs

Classical silvered wall mirrors feature Neoclassical or Louis XVI design elements, including floral crestings, foliage swags, and ribbon motifs atop rectangular frames. The silver leaf finish offers a cooler, more understated metallic aesthetic compared to traditional gold leaf gilding.

Frames were typically constructed with a timber core layered with gesso, followed by detailed composition or molded plaster ornament. The surface was then finished using silver leaf or metallic leaf coatings and sealed with protective lacquers to restrict oxidisation.

Authentic silvered finishes display natural signs of aging, such as subtle grey oxidisation, tarnish in deep recesses, and gentle wear revealing the underlying gesso or clay bole. The mirror glass may also show mild foxing or dark spotting along the edges.

A horizontal silvered mirror works exceptionally well positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or dining room sideboard. The cool metallic finish complements neutral grey, crisp white, or deep jewel-toned wall treatments.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or fine bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners which can strip fragile metallic leaf. Mirror glass should be cleaned using a damp cloth, ensuring water does not seep under the frame molding.
