Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1700s:
Lines of darkened, redundant tack holes: multiple recoverings throughout several centuries of use.
Pegged mortise and tenon framing: early jointing before glued construction became standard.
Worn and rounded front stretcher: prolonged rubbing from feet resting upon it.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early English side chair dates from around 1700 and follows the Jacobean style, constructed from dark brown oak paired with a textile upholstery. The upright frame supports a rectangular backrest and a padded seat, both upholstered in a soft red patterned carpet featuring intricate motifs. The dark wooden structure incorporates turned front legs and a twist stretcher connecting the lower framework. The timber shows visible wear consistent with an antique finish. Measuring 87 cm high by 54 cm wide by 42 cm deep, this side chair serves primarily as a decorative English country house piece to fill the eye in an interior space rather than for everyday seating. It stands well in a hallway, corner, or drawing room where historical textile work and traditional timber construction complement traditional and period room schemes.

Early English oak chairs from this era feature solid timber frames, heavy mortise and tenon joinery, bobbin or spiral lathe-turned front legs, and rectangular upholstered or carved backs.

These chairs were constructed primarily from native English oak, with upholstery featuring wool tapestry, velvet, or woven fabrics secured over horsehair padding.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed wood textures, peg joinery rather than modern fixings, slight irregularities in turned profiles, and natural oxidation around the lower legs and joints.

Positioning a single upholstered oak chair alongside contemporary minimalist decor creates a high-contrast focal point in a hallway, bedroom corner, or beside a writing desk.

Preserve the timber frame by applying clear beeswax polish sparingly along the wood grain and position the item away from direct heat sources to prevent moisture loss and timber splitting.
