Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale style furniture originated in 18th-century England under cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, defined by decorative back splats, serpentine crest rails, and balanced proportions. Revival versions produced in the late 19th century preserved these classic silhouettes using solid dark hardwoods.

Traditional construction favoured solid mahogany for its durability, fine grain, and deep reddish-brown finish. The frames were typically joined using mortise and tenon joints, featuring drop-in seats upholstered in various woven fabrics or leather.

Authentic 19th-century revival pieces display hand-carved detail along the back splat, age-appropriate patination on the timber, corner block reinforcements under the seat rail, and square or cabriole legs tied with supportive stretchers.

A single mahogany chair serves well as an accent seat at a contemporary writing desk, placed in an entryway, or positioned in a bedroom corner. Pairing warm timber tones with neutral fabric creates a subtle contrast in modern homes.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading of the timber and upholstery.
