Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian overmantle mirror, dating from 1880, is constructed from giltwood, gesso, and mirrored glass with a gold finish and an ebonised base. The wide rectangular frame displays corner breaks, floral rosettes, foliate moulding, and egg and dart trim, enclosing a bevelled mirror plate with minor spotting and a wooden panelled back. The piece measures 108 cm high, 165 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Positioned in an English Country House interior scheme, the overmantle mirror functions practically above the mantel in a principal reception room or a spacious hallway. The substantial proportions and gilded surface reflect natural daylight to brighten living spaces while adding architectural presence to traditional or eclectic fireplace settings.

FAQs

Victorian overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece, serving as a focal point in 19th-century reception rooms. They typically feature wide horizontal proportions, arch-top or rectangular frames, and decorative gilding with plaster or gesso moulding.

These frames were constructed using a timber core covered with gesso and molded plaster composition. Gold leaf was applied over the gesso, followed by burnishing, while the mirror plate was made from silvered flat glass.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit dark spots or oxidation, known as foxing, on the mirror plate. The reverse typically features solid pine or fir backing boards with hand-cut joins, and the gilding shows natural wear, revealing red or grey bole clay underneath.

Position the mirror above a chimney breast, sideboard, or console table to create depth and reflect natural light. Combining gilded period frames with neutral walls or modern minimalist furniture provides balanced contrast in contemporary spaces.

Dust the frame gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or feather duster without applying liquid cleaners, as moisture can dissolve gesso or strip gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be sprayed onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate to protect the frame.
