Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a specialized wall mirror designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Emerging in popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were scaled to fit the proportions of a chimney breast and reflect natural light throughout reception rooms.

19th-century gilt mirrors were typically constructed with a solid wooden substrate layered with gesso, a plaster-like compound used to mould decorative details. The frame was then finished with gold leaf gilding and fitted with hand-cut mirrored glass.

Authentic Victorian gilt mirrors feature timber backboards secured with old fasteners, fine seam lines where individual sheets of gold leaf were applied, and subtle surface craquelure in the gesso. The mirror glass may also exhibit age-appropriate foxing or slight oxidation.

An overmantel mirror can be mounted above a living room fireplace, positioned over a dining room sideboard, or hung in a hallway. It serves as a focal point that adds historical contrast to modern decorative schemes while enhancing room lighting.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth. Avoid applying water, liquid spray, or chemical cleaning solutions directly to the gilded gesso surface, as moisture can compromise the finish.
