We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Victorian writing boxes, often referred to as writing slopes, gained immense popularity during the 19th century as portable desks used for correspondence before the widespread availability of fitted household furniture.

These boxes were typically constructed from solid secondary woods veneered with decorative hardwoods like burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood, featuring dovetailed joints and brass or mother-of-pearl inlay.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate hand-cut dovetails, secret compartments, aged patination on the wood and brass hardware, and traditional hand-brushed French polish finishes.

Placing a closed writing box on a console table, sideboard, or desk introduces rich texture and historical character to a room while serving as a functional storage piece for modern correspondence.

Maintain antique wooden boxes by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the polished surface.
