This set of six Windsor low back armchairs dates from the mid-nineteenth century in the Georgian Country style. Constructed from warm brown yew, fruitwood, and elm, the chairs exhibit a rich timber grain, solid saddle seats, and decorative hoop backs incorporating pierced fancy fretted splats with burr yew accents. Further details include complex turned legs, curved flared arm supports, crinoline stretchers, and notches beneath the ends of the arms. Each armchair stands 90 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 59 cm deep, offering comfortable seating dimensions for domestic use. Traditional seating of this type suits placement around a dining table in an English Country House or period home setting, adding warmth and historical character to a dining room or study. The sturdy wooden construction and armrests provide practical support for daily use, while the matched arrangement creates a cohesive aesthetic for entertaining guests or family gatherings. The Nottinghamshire tradition design elements make these chairs a functional and decorative seating option for a formal dining space or a rustic kitchen interior.

A Windsor chair is a solid wooden chair featuring turned legs, spindles, and a curved back rail socketed directly into a thick, shaped wooden seat base. Originating in England during the 18th century, these country chairs were crafted by regional bodgers using local hardwoods such as elm, yew, and beech.

Elm was chosen for the seat due to its interlocking grain, which prevents splitting when leg and spindle sockets are drilled. Yew wood, valued for its flexibility and decorative grain pattern, was utilized for the steam-bent back bows, arm supports, and splats.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-turned legs, hand-carved pierced splats, and seats showing subtle hand-adze marks around the contours. Additionally, genuine age produces uneven wear patterns on footrests, natural shrinkage around joinery, and deep patina within the wood grain.

A set of antique Windsor chairs contrasts effectively with modern minimalist dining tables crafted from oak, zinc, or marble. Their sculptural silhouettes and warm timber tones add architectural interest and historic texture to modern country kitchens or Scandinavian-inspired dining spaces.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber and protect the original patina. Avoid placing the chairs near direct heat sources or damp environments to prevent wood shrinkage and joint movement.
