The Gainsborough chair originated in mid-18th-century England, featuring a wide seat and upholstered arms designed to accommodate the voluminous fashions of the period while remaining comfortable for writing or reading.

These chairs are typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, featuring traditional joinery, hand-tied coil spring interiors, horsehair stuffing, and genuine leather upholstery secured with individual brass tacks.

Authenticity can be determined by examining the timber grain, hand-forged or traditional headless tacks, natural wear patterns on the leather, and the presence of hand-stitched details rather than modern machine-crimped staples.

An antique leather armchair creates a sophisticated focal point when paired with a sleek, minimalist modern desk or used as a standalone accent seating piece in a neutral-toned living space.

Preserve antique leather by keeping it out of direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, and periodically applying micro-crystalline wax or specialized leather conditioners to prevent cracking.
