FAQs

A Regency convex wall mirror, often referred to as a bullseye mirror, is a circular looking glass featuring a curved plate that provides a wide-angle, panoramic reflection of a room. Popular during the early 19th century, these mirrors were frequently mounted with carved crests such as eagles and lower appliques.

These pieces are typically constructed from carved pine or softwood, which is then gessoed and hand-gilded with gold leaf. The frames often feature applied composition ornaments, such as turned spheres or reeding, surrounding a blown convex glass plate.

Authentication involves examining the gesso layer for age-related micro-crazing, checking the reverse for old pine boards or hand-cut nails, and inspecting the mirror plate for silvering degradation, distortion, or imperfections indicative of historical manufacturing techniques.

This mirror serves as a strong focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or in an entrance hall, contrasting effectively against contemporary neutral walls to add historical depth, texture, and reflected light.

Maintenance requires keeping the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent gilding degradation and using a dry, soft feather duster for cleaning. Liquid cleaners should be strictly avoided to protect the fragile water-gilt or oil-gilt surface.
