Large Antique Italian 18th Century Gilt Wood Mirror

19th century
Description

An exceptionally beautiful and very large antique Italian 18th century gilt wood mirror, dating from around the 1780-1800 period.

It is a very impressive size, and of incredibly high quality, the frame is carved from solid wood and has incredibly beautiful details depicting grapes and vine leaves. This would have been designed as an overmantel mirror for a room with very high ceilings, but it is equally useful as a floor standing mirror.

We have had the gilt wood frame revived and restored by a master gilder, the solid plinth base has been replaced, it was copied exactly as the original was, it’s made from stained solid oak. There is some incredibly minor wear and spotting to the silvered backing of the mirror. Overall this is in superb condition for its age.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Eighteenth-century Italian giltwood mirrors are defined by elaborate hand-carved timber frames coated in gesso and gold leaf, frequently featuring organic vine motifs, scrolling acanthus leaves, and arched silhouettes influenced by Baroque and Rococo design.

Carvers constructed these frames from softwoods such as pine or lime, applying a plaster-based gesso foundation followed by a bole clay layer to receive thin sheets of water-gilded gold leaf.

Authentic period examples demonstrate traditional wood joinery, subtle shrinkage lines in the gesso, gentle wear revealing the reddish bole clay beneath the gold leaf, and slight imperfections or oxidation in the original glass plate.

Positioning an ornate gilded mirror above a contemporary sideboard or minimalist fireplace creates a refined focal point that balances historic craft with clean architectural lines.

Dust the detailed carving gently using a dry, soft-bristled artist brush or microfibre cloth, keeping moisture and liquid cleaners away from the water-sensitive gesso and gold leaf layer.
