FAQs

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace to reflect candlelight and natural light into a room.

Traditional overmantel mirrors typically feature a hand-carved wooden or composition base layered with gesso, which is then gilded with gold leaf. The glass is often silvered by hand, resulting in characteristic minor foxing over time.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-beveled or distorted float glass, early backboards secured with old screws or nails, and natural crazing or patina in the gesso and gilt finish.

Positioning an overmantel mirror above a fireplace adds verticality and reflects light, pairing effectively with both minimalist contemporary furniture and traditional settings to create a sophisticated focal point.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical cleaning agents or abrasive materials on the delicate gilt surface and antique glass.
