Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A porters chair originated in European grand houses as deep, hooded seating placed near entrances to protect hall porters from cold draughts. By the late 19th and early 20th centuries, lightweight wicker versions were crafted for sunrooms, conservatories, and sheltered indoor spaces.

These chairs are constructed using a solid framework woven over with natural materials such as rattan, reed, or willow wicker. The interior hood and back were frequently lined or upholstered with floral or patterned fabric to provide draught exclusion and comfort.

Authentic early 20th-century pieces feature hand-woven natural cane or wicker over a timber structure, showing natural tonal variation. Look for period construction details such as braided wicker edging along the dome opening and integrated woven side handles.

Placed as a focal piece in a conservatory, sunroom, or spacious living corner, a wicker porters chair adds textural contrast and architectural height. It pairs well with botanical prints, natural linen cushions, and timber side tables to create a dedicated reading area.

Clean the wicker structure using a soft brush or vacuum attachment with low suction to remove dust from crevices without loosening the weave. Keep the item away from direct heat sources or damp environments, and spot-clean any internal fabric lining using dry upholstery cleaning methods.
