Georgian mirrors from the 18th century are characterised by classic proportions, symmetry, and the use of fine timbers such as mahogany and walnut, often featuring architectural mouldings and hand-carved details.

Cabinet makers typically utilised dense hardwoods like solid mahogany or pine frames with secondary wood backings, paired with handmade silvered mirror glass plates that often exhibit characteristic oxidisation.

Authentication relies on examining the construction methods, such as hand-cut joinery, old timber shrinkage cracks, original backboards, and the presence of mercury or silver-nitrate mirror plate imperfections.

Mounting the piece as a focal point against a neutral or richly painted wall allows the warm wood tones to add depth and historic contrast to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the piece by keeping it out of direct sunlight, avoiding chemical glass cleaners that can damage old silvering, and occasionally conditioning the wooden frame with specialist museum-grade wax.
