Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Empire mirrors developed during the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte in the early 19th century. They feature Neoclassical architectural silhouettes, rich timber veneers, and gilded bronze ormolu embellishments inspired by classical Roman, Greek, and Egyptian motifs.

These mirrors were primarily constructed using solid native woods faced with flame mahogany or rosewood veneers. Decorative elements were cast in bronze and fire-gilded to create ormolu, while mirror plates were rendered using silver or mercury glass.

Authentic pieces feature heavy hand-sawn timber backboards, mercury-gilded bronze mounts attached with period-appropriate screws, and subtle silvering loss or grey freckling on the glass. Look for fine chasing work on the bronze mounts and hand-cut dovetails or mortise-and-tenon framing joints.

An Empire mirror works effectively as a focal point positioned above a sleek console table, modern fireplace mantel, or hallway sideboard. The strong architectural lines and warm mahogany hues complement neutral contemporary walls and transitional room layouts.

Dust wood and metal surfaces gently with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth. Avoid abrasive polishes or chemical solvents on ormolu mounts, as these can strip the original gilding, and spray glass cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate to prevent moisture damage to the backing.
