Also known as a convex or bullseye mirror, these optical devices date back centuries and were often placed in Renaissance and Victorian interiors to monitor a room or historically used in divination and folk magic.

Authentic period pieces typically feature blown convex glass yielding a spherical reflection, set within a hand-turned wooden frame, often accompanied by a plaster or gesso slip.

Authentication involves inspecting the glass for hand-blown imperfections, mercury or silver oxidisation at the edges, and the construction marks on the rear wooden backing board.

Their wide-angle reflective properties make them ideal for bouncing natural light around small spaces, often hung singly as a focal point or grouped amongst eclectic artwork.

Clean the glass sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical sprays, and avoid exposing the fragile silvering on the reverse to excessive moisture or direct sunlight.
