Georgian oval mirrors typically feature symmetrical proportions inspired by classical Greek and Roman architecture. Common design elements include carved pine or lime wood frames, gesso application, gold leaf gilding, and ornamentation such as foliate scrolls, urn crestings, and egg-and-dart moulding.

Frames from this period were crafted from softwoods like pine, shaped and carved before being coated in layers of gesso. Thin sheets of gold leaf were applied over a red or yellow bole clay base using water gilding or oil gilding techniques, surrounding a hand-blown or cast glass plate.

Authentic period pieces often show natural wear where the gold leaf has thinned, exposing the underlying bole clay or gesso. Look for hand-carved joinery on the rear pine frame, hand-cut backboards, and slight irregularities or gentle oxidisation spots within the mercury glass plate.
