FAQs

Cribbage experienced a surge in popularity during the Victorian era, leading to the production of elaborate folding and fitted wooden boxes designed to hold cards, counters, and pegged scoring tracks.

These boxes were typically fashioned from dense hardwoods like rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, frequently featuring inlaid decorative elements such as mother-of-pearl, brass stringing, and bone.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-cut dovetails, traditional brass hinges, patinated timber surfaces, and hand-inlaid details rather than modern stamped veneers.

Placed atop a coffee table, side cabinet, or bookshelf, an antique game box adds rich texture, historical interest, and a focal point of dark wood to contemporary living spaces.

Rosewood items should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and maintained occasionally with a light application of microcrystalline wax.
