FAQs

During the Georgian era, tea was an expensive commodity, leading to the creation of locked containers known as tea caddies to safeguard the dry leaves from theft and moisture.

Caddies were typically constructed from fine hardwoods like mahogany, burl walnut, and yew, featuring intricate marquetry, stringing, and internal foil or lead linings to preserve the aroma of the tea.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber grain, hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass or bone escutcheons, and the presence of aged hand-planed internal secondary woods.

An antique tea caddy can be styled as an object of curiosity on a sideboard, desk, or open shelving, adding texture and historic interest to modern living spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent warping, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to maintain the finish without harming the patina.
