Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gillows style country house armchairs are defined by their generous proportions, deep seating, fine cabinet-making standards, and comfort. Common attributes include turned mahogany front legs on brass castors, splayed back legs, and high-quality upholstery designed for country residences.

19th-century seating typically features solid hardwood frames such as mahogany, oak, or beech, fitted with hand-tied steel coil springs, webbing, horsehair filling, and brass castors. Decorative upholstery ranged from heavy woven wools and damasks to leather.

Authentic period armchairs often display stamped makers marks or serial numbers on the rear legs or castors, such as Gillows or Cope & Collinson. The presence of original turned timber legs, brass castors, and heavy hardwood frame construction further indicates authentic origin.

A pair of Victorian armchairs can be used to frame a fireplace, positioned opposite a modern sofa, or placed in a quiet reading corner. Re-upholstering in contemporary or patterned textiles creates a balanced contrast between historic framework and modern decor.

Wooden legs should be dusted with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with beeswax, avoiding harsh chemical sprays. Upholstery requires regular gentle vacuuming with a fabric attachment, while brass castors can be cleaned using a specialized metal polish to prevent tarnish.
