Superb Quality Late 19th Century Mahogany Open Armchair in the Style of Giles Grendey

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb quality late 19th century mahogany open armchair or desk chair in the style of Giles Grendey.

This chair consists of a superbly shaped and carved back of sophisticated design in the form of a stylised shell with harebell and foliate decoration leading down to a gadrooned plinth with foliate design below.

The wonderfully shaped and scrolling arms consist of carved decoration replicating the feathers of birds terminating with decorative eagle heads with carved and shaped arm supports, the seat finished in a reddish brown leather with brass studwork.

The chair is supported on four cabriole legs, the front two being superbly carved with acanthus decoration terminating with hairy paw feet, the back legs of cabriole design.

This chair is after a design dating to around 1730/1740 by the renowned London cabinetmaker Giles Grendey (1693-1780) and can be seen in many furniture books such as ‘English Furniture of the 18th century’ by Herbert Cescinsky Volume I pages 84/85 and Volume II pages 48/49.

There are also very similar examples of chairs by Giles Grendey in The Philadelphia Museum of Arts in USA.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
