Convex mirrors, often known as bullseye or bankers mirrors, gained immense popularity during the Regency and Victorian periods in Europe, historically utilised in parlours to monitor a wider field of vision.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from hand-carved wood or gesso over a wooden substrate, finished with hand-applied gold leaf or gilt and fitted with a curved spherical glass plate.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the ageing of the gilt finish, the presence of hand-carved detailing rather than modern resin moulds, and historical characteristics of the glass plate such as subtle distortions or foxing.

Interior designers frequently use round convex mirrors as a focal point above a mantelpiece or console table to bounce light around a room and introduce a layer of historical contrast.

Preserve the fragile gilt surface by dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning solutions, and hanging the mirror securely away from direct moisture and intense sunlight.
