A monk table chair, also known as a chair table or wainscot chair table, is a historic dual-purpose piece of furniture that dates back to the Tudor and Jacobean periods in England, designed to save space by functioning as both a seat and a dining surface.

These pieces are predominantly constructed from solid English oak, joined using traditional pegged mortise and tenon joinery, and often feature hand-turned structural elements and carved wooden panels.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut peg joints, tool marks, timber shrinkage, and a natural oxidised patina developed over centuries of use, distinguishing them from later reproduction items.

This type of historical seating can be incorporated as a statement piece in a study, hallway, or living room, pairing well with neutral walls and minimalist modern decor to highlight its architectural form.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, avoiding chemical polishes, and periodically feeding the timber with traditional beeswax to maintain the surface condition.
