Description

A smart and very well made pair of antique mahogany and leather carver armchairs. They were made in England, and date from around the 1900-1910 period.

They are beautifully made and are of very fine quality. The pierced backs have lovely intricate carving with a wheat sheaf design, they sit on tapered legs with H stretcher bases. The leather upholstery has a beautiful patina, having just been revived by our leather restorer.

We have had these recently re-polished, they are in excellent condition for their age with just some minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Hepplewhite style furniture, prominent in the late 18th century, is characterised by graceful lines, tapered legs, and distinctive shield-shaped or heart-shaped chair backs often featuring carved Prince of Wales feathers or urn motifs.

These chairs are traditionally constructed using dense tropical hardwoods such as mahogany, paired with vegetable-tanned bovine leather for the upholstery, secured with traditional brass tacks.

Authentication involves examining timber oxidisation, hand-cut joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, wear patterns on the foot terminals, and the weight and grain structure of old-growth mahogany.

Pair these architectural armchairs with a minimalist contemporary dining table to create a striking contrast, or use them as standalone study chairs against neutral walls.

Maintain the wood with microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, and treat the leather periodically with appropriate saddle soap or neutral leather balms to prevent cracking while keeping them away from direct sunlight.
