Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chinese export lacquerware refers to lacquer items produced in China from the late seventeenth to the nineteenth century specifically made for export to Western markets. These items were decorated with traditional Asian landscapes, floral motifs, and court scenes using gilded or polychrome techniques on a dark lacquered base.

These cabinets were typically constructed with soft wood bases covered in layers of natural lacquer derived from the sap of Toxicodendron vernicifluum. Gold leaf or metallic pigments were applied by hand to create the detailed gilded decorations, and brass fitments were used for hinges and locks.

Authentic pieces exhibit fine, hand-painted gilt decoration that displays natural wear, along with fine age-related surface cracking known as craquelure in the lacquer layer. Construction details such as hand-cut joinery, thin brass hardware with patina, and dark plain lacquered interiors or back panels also indicate authenticity.

A lacquer table cabinet serves as a strong focal point when displayed on a neutral sideboard, console table, or within a bookshelf module. Pairing it with modern abstract artwork, sculptural ceramics, or brass accents balances the traditional chinoiserie detail with contemporary aesthetics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding commercial aerosol polishes, solvents, or water which can damage the lacquer layer. Maintain stable ambient humidity and temperature levels, and keep the piece out of direct sunlight to prevent lacquer shrinkage, cracking, or pigment fading.
