Heritage & Craftsmanship

This handsome open armchair dates from the early 20th century and draws inspiration from the Gainsborough form - a high-backed, open-armed design favoured since the 18th century for its comfort and elegance. The frame is enriched with blind fretwork carving and a pierced fretted stretcher, details that add both decorative refinement and structural integrity.

The chair has been reupholstered in William Morris’s celebrated ‘Willow Bough’ fabric, designed in 1887 and still admired for its flowing, naturalistic pattern. The combination of traditional joinery, carved ornament, and iconic Arts & Crafts textile makes this piece a meeting point of two great British design traditions.

Visual Details

The show wood frame has a warm, polished tone, its carved details crisp and well-defined. The pierced stretcher adds visual lightness while reinforcing the frame. The ‘Willow Bough’ upholstery is expertly tailored, with the pattern flowing seamlessly across the seat, back, and arms. The generous seat depth and supportive backrest ensure comfort as well as style.

Styling Suggestions

Perfect as a statement armchair in a living room, library, or study, this piece also works beautifully in a bedroom reading nook or as a feature chair in a boutique hotel or reception space. Pair with other Arts & Crafts or Georgian-inspired furniture for a cohesive look, or let it stand alone as a conversation piece.

Sustainable Style
