FAQs

A corner chair, also known as a roundabout or desk chair, features a diagonal orientation designed to fit neatly into room corners. Originating in the early 18th century, these pieces evolved through various revival periods, incorporating intricate carvings and upholstered drop-in seats.

These items are traditionally constructed from dense hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or oak, utilising mortise and tenon joinery. Skilled artisans carved decorative motifs by hand, often featuring pierced splats, turned supports, and upholstered drop-in pads.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, natural timber shrinkage, and appropriate patination on the wood surfaces. Examination of the joinery, hardware, and secondary woods underneath often reveals historical manufacturing methods distinct from modern reproductions.

This type of chair functions effectively as a sculptural accent piece in an office, hallway, or living area. Pairing the traditional wood and upholstery with contemporary minimalism creates a balanced contrast that highlights the historic craftsmanship.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and keeping the timber away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate wax helps maintain the historic finish.
