The wainscot chair is an early form of wooden armchair that emerged in Britain during the late medieval and Tudor periods, traditionally constructed from oak panelling before upholstered seating became widespread.

These chairs are constructed from solid English oak, utilising traditional joinery techniques such as mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs, often featuring carved wooden panels and turned supports.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, patina, construction methods appropriate to the era, and signs of genuine wear and oxidisation on the wood surface.

This piece can be styled as a focal point in a study or hallway, juxtaposed against minimalist or contemporary surroundings to highlight its sculptural form and historic texture.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the wooden surface.
