ObjectCandle Boxes
Period18th century
StyleRustic Country
MaterialOak
ColourDark Brown
MotifsShaped backboard, Tear-shaped aperture, Sliding lid panel, Quarter-sawn grain

This 18th century hanging candle box belongs to the rustic country style and is made of oak with a dark brown finish. The timber displays a noticeable quarter-drawn grain and warm patina. A tall shaped backboard extends upwards into a rounded handle with a central tear-shaped hanging aperture, while the rectangular box section below is fitted with a sliding front panel and exposed dovetail joints at the corners. The entire piece measures 54 cm high, 18 cm wide and 12 cm deep. Originally designed to hold household candles in period dwellings, the box works well in a modern home mounted on a narrow wall space in a hallway, kitchen or utility room. It provides practical storage for small everyday items while bringing traditional country character to an interior.

FAQs

In the 18th century, hanging candle boxes were practical domestic items mounted near hearths or work areas to store valuable tallow or beeswax candles securely away from dampness and pests.

These items were typically crafted from native hardwoods like oak using simple joinery, featuring a vertical sliding front panel and an extended backboard with an aperture for wall attachment.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-planing on the reverse, natural patination around the hanging aperture, quarter-sawn oak grain patterns, and historical smooth wear within the sliding lid grooves.

Wall-mounted candle boxes function effectively in narrow wall spaces, alcoves, or entryways, acting as sculptural architectural wall art or practical storage for dried botanicals.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically, keeping the object away from extreme heat sources to prevent wood movement.
