Description

A very good quality pair of antique William IV mahogany side chairs or library chairs dating from circa 1830 from York Minster. They have flame figured mahogany top rails with carved gadrooned edges over intricately carved and pierced centre rails with acanthus leaf designs. The chairs have turned front legs and sabre back legs. The drop-in seats have been fairly recently upholstered in a red leather. Solid and sturdy, with good patina, would make wonderful desk chairs or side chairs.

These chairs were purchased from York Minster, and were in St Williams College. Founded in 1460, St William’s College is a Mediaeval building in York, England, originally built to provide accommodation for priests attached to chantry chapels at nearby York Minster.

The William IV style spans the 1830s, bridging late Regency and early Victorian aesthetics, characterised by robust proportions, classical revival motifs, and dark woods like mahogany.

These chairs are predominantly constructed from solid mahogany and veneered mahogany, frequently upholstered in leather or horsehair fabric over traditional webbing and stuffing.

Authenticity is identified through traditional joinery methods, hand-turned legs, carved scrollwork details, timber patina, and structural wear consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing.

Pairing antique dining chairs with a contemporary dining table creates a balanced juxtaposition, adding warmth, historical contrast, and craftsmanship to a modern space.

Maintain antique mahogany by avoiding direct sunlight and applying microcrystalline wax periodically, while conditioning leather surfaces gently with specialist balms to prevent drying.
