Lincoln Restorations has dated these Victorian Oak Hall Chairs to the Victorian era.
A magnificent pair of Arts & Crafts hall chairs.
This style embodies the era's blend of fine craftsmanship and artistic decoration. Each chair is meticulously crafted from solid oak, displaying a rich, warm patina and beautiful graining that speak their age and quality.

The chairs' most captivating feature is their original integrated Minton ceramic tiles set within their backrests. These sought after Minton tiles are designed by John Moyr Smith for Mintons China Works and were made around 1870-1875. One tile depicts the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by fire, a scene of divine judgment from the Old Testament. It captures the cataclysmic event and the figures' reactions, highlighting the artist's ability to portray intense drama. Conversely, the other tile illustrates Adam and Eve's expulsion from the Garden of Eden. This tile focuses on their despair as they are driven out by an angelic figure, emphasising the profound consequences of their disobedience and the sorrow of losing paradise. Further enhancing their appeal, the chairs stand on elegantly turned and fluted front legs and feature sturdy, solid Oak seats. The backrests boast a distinctive dome-topped shape, with a central bar back and panels which frames and highlights the central Minton tiles. The backs are also strengthened via rather pretty corner brackets with rounded dowels typical of Arts & Crafts pieces.

Designed for placement in entrance halls or libraries, these chairs are not merely functional pieces but serve as remarkable examples of decorative art, combining robust Victorian construction with the intricate beauty of Minton's renowned tile artistry. They represent a unique opportunity to own a piece of furniture history. The chairs have been sympathetically restored and fully checked over in our workshop, they are solid with no loose joints or wobbles and do not have any signs of woodworm. These spectacular chairs are in a lovely original condition which we have just enhanced by carefully waxing to preserve and give a natural sheen.

Condition and Provenance As antiques, these chairs show signs of age and use. While in good condition, expect minor marks consistent with historical pieces. The chairs have a strong design and are all structurally sound, with no major damage that would detract from their beauty or functionality.
