19th century
Description

Pair of Original Antique Victorian Carved Hall Chairs .

A fine addition to any period hallway.

We bring to you this rather pretty pair of Victorian solid Oak hall chairs made in the gothic style around C1850.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 18th and 19th centuries, hall chairs were designed specifically for grand entryways to provide temporary seating for visitors. Typically crafted without upholstery, they featured decorative backrests, often displaying family crests or intricate carvings.

Victorian hall chairs were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut. They featured unpadded wooden seats, turned or tapered front legs, and intricately carved or pierced timber backrests.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative motifs, natural age-related patination, and traditional joinery techniques like mortise and tenon joints. The absence of modern synthetic glues and the presence of slight irregularities in hand-finished surfaces also indicate authenticity.

Position a pair of hall chairs flanking a console table or along a hallway wall to create a structured focal point. Their strong silhouettes and rich wood tones complement both traditional spaces and contemporary entryways as decorative accent seating.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the timber. Avoid placing solid wood furniture in direct sunlight or near radiator heat sources to prevent cracking and warping.
