Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

The Rococo movement originated in France during the early 18th century as a reaction against the heavier, more formal symmetry of the Baroque era. It is characterised by elaborate ornamentation, asymmetrical curves, and natural motifs such as shells and acanthus leaves.

Traditional frames were typically carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, then coated with gesso and multiple layers of bole before applying delicate sheets of gold leaf. The metallic surface was often burnished with agate stone to achieve a luminous finish.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing, such as fine craquelure in the gesso, subtle wear revealing the reddish bole beneath the gold leaf, and hand-carved tool marks on the reverse. Modern resin or plastic reproductions lack these organic imperfections and the distinct weight of carved timber.

Pairing an ornate historical mirror with clean-lined modern furniture creates a sophisticated contrast that highlights the craftsmanship of the piece. Hanging it above a minimalist console or fireplace anchor point allows the elaborate frame to serve as a focal point without overwhelming the room.

Giltwood is extremely delicate and water-sensitive; surfaces should only be dusted gently with a dry, soft feather duster or microfiber cloth. Avoid all chemical cleaning agents, polishes, and excessive moisture to prevent lifting or tarnishing of the gold leaf.
