Description

A fantastic pair of antique Biedermeier mahogany side chairs. They were made in continental Europe, possibly Denmark, or somewhere close and they are quite early, dating from around the 1790-1820 period, or even earlier.

The quality is outstanding, they have gorgeous and intricate carving depicting eagles heads on the backs, the legs are also beautifully carved.

We have had them re-polished and re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric, retaining the original horse hair stuffing. The condition is excellent for their age.

Please check & enlarge all the images, especially the stunning carved eagles heads, which in themselves are a work of art, plus the reeding & other carved details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Biedermeier style originated in Central Europe between 1815 and 1848, characterised by utilitarian comfort, clean lines, and a focus on domestic warmth using local woods.

Biedermeier furniture typically utilised local European timbers such as cherry, ash, pear, and birch, though imported woods like mahogany were also employed for high-status pieces.

Authentic pieces feature restrained ornamentation, expert joinery, symmetrical wood grain patterns, and structural designs that prioritise functional elegance over excessive decoration.

Pairing historical seating with minimalist or modern tables creates a curated contrast, allowing the craftsmanship of the antique pieces to stand out as focal points.

Maintain antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate wax polish.
